Organic Bug Celebrates World Fair Trade Day on May 8

Organic Bug is proud of our diverse selection of Fair Trade products we offer to consumers.  Fair Trade partnerships foster responsible business practices that ultimately help producers help themselves based on the idea of putting people first……it means the workers who made the product were paid fair wages and work in safe and healthy environments.  It also means the profits received from the sale goes back to their community:
World Fair Trade Day is an initiative of the World Fair Trade Organization and will be celebrated on  May 8th.
This year Partners in Fair Trade is offering consumers the chance to win a $250 shopping spree at your local participating Fair Trade store; like Organic Bug!  Be sure to visit Fair Trade Shopping Spree to learn how you can enter!
The spirit of Organic Bug is to build a successful business with a focus on the environment, social justice, personal development and sustainable living; and working with Fair Trade producers plays a pivotal role in fulfilling our mission.  We have the ability to use our purchasing power as a vote for social and environmental change.  Support Fair Trade organizations!

On May 9,  World Fair Trade Day was celebrated throughout the US and the world with events and music to raise the awareness of the importance of socially conscious consumerism.  We celebrated this event  by renewing our commitment to our ongoing partnerships with dynamic cooperatives around the world.

World Fair Trade Day is a global campaign connecting small scale producers mostly from developing countries with customers on every continent. I am proud that stores like Organic Bug have become the driving force over the last five years propelling the Fair Trade movement through increased awareness in the marketplace. We are dedicated to unity and with that unity evolves the creation of one voice that has the power to demand positive change; real change to eliminate poverty, reverse the ill effects of climate change and reset the global stage to avert future financial crises.

What began as a grassroots movement over twenty years ago, World Fair Trade Day has evolved into an immense trading affiliation contributing to sustainable development in developing countries. Only five years ago the mention of “Fair Trade” created a look of confusion on the face of most consumers. With the help of non-profit organizations like The World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), the authentic voice of Fair Trade and a guardian of Fair Trade values, increased awareness has resulted in hundreds if not thousands of businesses all over the world bringing Fair Trade goods to the marketplace.

With the purchase of Fair Trade products, change is inevitable. To get involved simply buy something on World Fair Trade Day (or any day for that matter), buy Fair Trade whether it’s tea, coffee, chocolate, bananas, sugar, wine, flowers or gifts for any occasion—go to your favorite place to shop and ask where you can find the Fair Trade items you want. If they have it, great! If they don’t, you have started them thinking along the right path! Either way you become an active participant for change.

We encourage you to stand united with the millions of voices dedicated to kick-starting a sustainable economy for a sustainable future for the good of all, not just the privileged few. Join world renowned celebrities and leading visionaries like Annie Lennox, Colin MacIntyre, Desmond Tutu, Paul McCartney and many others who support justice and human rights.

Annie Lennox says this about world poverty: “The long-term solution to poverty does not, ultimately, lie in ‘charity’ – it lies in giving people access to opportunity. Fair Trade is absolutely crucial to millions of people whose daily life is a struggle for survival.”

World Fair Trade Day is the soapbox demanding transparency and responsibility through fair dealings built on principle. Supporting Fair Trade this month and throughout the year is the key to building a foundation for generations to come.

As the bright star of consumer consciousness gives way to a new dawn, light is allowed to penetrate and destroy old ways of thinking. Be the change.
